Soft Ground
Soft ground boots exist for one problem: grass that gives way underneath you. The studs are longer and there are fewer of them, so each one can push through the surface layer and find something solid beneath.
Soft, wet or muddy natural grass — winter pitches and heavy rain
Fewer, longer studs, usually metal and often replaceable by screwing in and out
What SG cleats are for
Most soft ground boots take replaceable studs. That is the real advantage — you can fit longer studs for a waterlogged January pitch and shorter ones when it dries out, from the same pair.
Check your league rules before buying. Some youth and amateur competitions do not allow metal studs, and referees do check.
- Winter football on grass that churns up
- Heavy rain and pitches that hold water
- Players who want to swap stud length as conditions change
Dry, hard ground. Long metal studs cannot penetrate firm soil, so they push your foot up off the sole and put the whole load through a few points.
