Firm Ground
Firm ground is the standard football boot and the one most players need. The studs are moulded into the sole and shaped to bite into grass that gives a little underfoot but is not soft or waterlogged.
Natural grass pitches in normal to dry conditions
Moulded studs, usually a mix of bladed and conical, permanently fixed to the sole
What FG cleats are for
The stud pattern is doing two jobs at once. Bladed studs along the outside edge hold the foot when you change direction; rounder studs under the ball of the foot let it rotate so the knee is not fighting the ground when you turn.
If your pitch is grass and it is not a mud bath, this is the boot. It is also the pattern almost every professional wears on a Saturday, which is why the widest choice of models sits here.
- Match play on maintained natural grass
- Most Sunday league and school pitches through spring and autumn
- A first pair, if you only buy one
Artificial turf. Firm ground studs are long and few, so on a synthetic surface they concentrate load on the knee and wear the sole flat.
